Christmas music!

I always want to start listening to Christmas music about a week or two before Thanksgiving.  My husband and kids think that’s too early though so I try my hardest to put it off.  I’ll admit though, that if no one is home, I’ll listen before Thanksgiving and savor every moment of it.

The songs that I find my self listening to over and over each season vary from year to year.  Some years, I love the fun, whimsical songs.  Some years, I love the spiritual songs.

This year, I find that I love the CDs that I have with no words.  Except Manheim Steamroller. Which is weird, because normally, I love them.  This year, I’ve listened to Kurt Bestor, my Mormon Hymn Classics with the Philharmonic Orchestra and my Christmas Piano CDs more than ever before.  They are just so relaxing and calming.

I do love a few of the songs on one particular CD though.  It’s called Gifts by Cherie Call.  Have you heard of her?  She is an LDS singer/songwriter.  Normally, I like just the traditional songs, but she has written a few on this album that are phenomenal.  And, no this isn’t an ad.  I was hoping to find videos of these songs to share, but I was unsuccessful.

One is Behind the Scenes.  It is sung by a man in the voice of Joseph.  It brings tears to my eyes because I suspect that it is very close to how Joseph really felt.

My favorite line from the song says:

Mary gave Him her tender heart; God gave Him everything.  I tried to teach Him how to walk, and I held Him on my knee.  I pulled splinters from His gentle hands when He worked the wood with me.  I tried to save Him from the pain, but He was saving me, behind the scenes.”

Another is I Just Knew which is sung by Ms. Call in the voice of Mary.  It also brings tears to my eyes.  Mary was just an amazing woman and I can not wait until I get to meet her someday.

“And everybody asks me how I’m sure that the little boy I raised is our Redeemer. I could list the dreams and prophecies and miracles that prove His mission true; but in all honesty, every moment I was with Him, I just knew.”

The other original song Cherie Call does on the album is One Star.  It’s a beautiful song.  She also sings The First Noel, Silent Night and one of my favorites, I Wonder As I Wander.  If you live by a Deseret Book or a Seagull, I’d highly recommend this album.

What music are you enjoying?  Also, am I the last person on earth that still listens to CDs and not an iPod?

Oh honey I don't even know how to turn on/off my sons Ipod! It seems way to complicated..lol. I love Christmas music though and I start thinking about it after Halloween. I remember in Utah there was a certain radio station that would go to X-mas only on NOv 26 and I loved it. Here though, besides the fact that I have yet to find a good radio station, they hardly play x-mas music. Its sad!!! They do, however, have a christian radio station and so I mostly listen to that. I could do without the some of the DJ's but the music is great :)I may try out some of your suggestions cause I like those lyrics.
