Shopping

I was going to post about the horrors of potty-training but I decided that no one wants to read my poop & frustration stories. (I will take any potty-training advice that you have to give, though.) Instead, I will tell you about my favorite thing about fall:

School Supplies!

My kid's school doesn't require us to buy any supplies. They have us pay a fee for each child, and they provide everything. On the one hand this is nice, but on the other, I miss needing to buy school supplies, and for the $50 I pay the school, I could buy A LOT of supplies at Wal-Mart.

We made our weekly trek to Wal-Mart this morning and I was delighted to see the bins full of school supplies. I find that I can't help myself when it comes to packages of new pencils, crayons and shiny new notebooks. I did pretty good though...I only bought a pencil sharpener (my kids keep hauling mine off), a new notebook for each child and myself (5 cents each - a bargain!), and six new composition notebooks. I plan to use them for journals for my primary class at the end of the year. I cover them with paper, and personalize them with some sort of embellishment. It makes for a fun journal/coloring book.

I also got my lifesaver - a new calendar for the fridge. I love the one that they sell there - it is the perfect size. It doesn't come with magnets but I just hot-glue a few on the back and there goes everything that happens in a family - play group dates, doctor appointments, vacations, book club dates, etc. If it isn't written down, it isn't happening! Thus, I forgot to go to a Pampered Chef party on Saturday. Oops!

What is your favorite school supply to buy? What can you NOT resist?

I LOVE supplies and sure don't need the beginning of school to prompt me to spend a mint. I like paying the school to shop for supplies too because then when I see the school supply bins at the store I can shop for what I want instead of what my kids need!

The journals are such a great idea!

I LOVE school supplies too! They just scream fall and new beginnings and fun, don't they?
I can't resist pens. Any sort of pen. Pencils and markers too, but pens really do me in.

Pens, markers, glue! Oh, I love them all!

I always do a major stock up and keep them in a cabinet for the kids to take what they need all year long...and of course, I help myself to the yumminess!

I love to see back to school things because it reminds me of my first day of school each year. New backpacks, new clothes, and all that new stuff (no matter how small) in the backpack. Even boxes of kleenex seem exciting because it was always on our school list.

That's interesting that you have to pay such a high fee for the school to provide school supplies. In a school my friend was teaching in, the teachers are not allowed to request school supplies and there isn't a fee charged for them either. They can recommend a donation, but the students don't have to pay it. The teachers have to provide a lot of the stuff. It's interesting what "public" education is interpreted as in some places.

Oh, and potty training...that could take many posts. I understand. My oldest has been accident free for two or three months, but we did start potty training back in January. He regressed so many times that I also requested any help I could get. I'm not sure what you have already tried, but I got some good advice in comments. I was also encouraged to go search the archives at Mormon Mommy Wars and Tales from the Crib. Good luck!

I love that the PTO at our elementary school put together school packs for each of the grades you can buy. I bought one for each of my kids now the only thing I have to get them for school is their actual backpack.

I am a freak this time of year about markers. Since Wal-Mart sells Crayolas for 88 cents a box from summer to fall-ish, I can't leave that stupid store without buying at least three boxes. Even if we already have ten at home. I'm addicted.

I could use those potty training tips myself.
I love school/office supply's. I will walk into an office store and just take a deep breath. Love the smell. The office store is my second favorite place to go. A bookstore being the first. :-)
