New Calling

I got a new calling* at church today.  It’s been a couple of months since I had a calling, and I enjoyed the little bit of time off that I had.  I’ll admit though, that I was feeling the need to be back in service for the ward.  So here it is:

Provident Living Specialist

I’ll admit when I heard the title, I thought that it was a made up calling.  Especially when the bishopric member that gave me the call didn’t really have any details for me. He told me to check the Provident Living website.  I did, and I tell you, I was very overwhelmed.

So, I did a good ol’ google search.  I’m not really sure what our RS president has in mind but this is what other PLS’s are doing:

  • Couponing
  • Food Storage (Building one, and using one)
  • 5 ingredient dishes
  • Living within your means
  • Bartering (babysitting swap, freezer meals)
  • Cutting expenses
  • 72 Hour Kits
  • Helping with annual Preparedness Fairs
  • Coordinate family canning trips and bulk food orders on a ward level
  • Locate other cost effective storage items for ward members to purchase
  • Keep current surveys from each family in regard to preparedness and resources: IE - skills, tools, storage, communication
  • Give or arrange for demonstrations, or lectures relating to provident living or emergency preparedness

Needless to say, this didn’t make me any less overwhelmed.  That’s a long list.  A lot of stuff that I don’t know a lot about.  A lot of stuff that I should probably learn.  I’m sure that is why I have this calling ~ so that I can learn.

Are you a Provident Living Specialist?  Does your ward have one?  What does he/she do?

Wish me luck!

*In the LDS church, members of the congregation accept callings to fulfill positions that are needed.  We have a lay ministry, and all teachers, leaders, etc are voluntary.

Bryan also got a new calling.  Now he is both Stake YM 1st Counselor, and the Cub Master.

Wow, good luck! In our ward, Provident Living Specialist means permanent Primary sub, because you aren't tied up somewhere on Sunday.

I don't know all that our PLS does, but the bits and pieces I see, she does a really good job. We occasionally get emails about good deals at grocery stores, or bulk orders happening. If she sees a good article about finances, etc. she forwards it to everyone. I think in the very beginning she sent around a sign up for those who wanted the emails. She sends a lot, and some people get turned off by constant emails.

She's the cannery guru too, but I tune out when cannery announcements come up so I don't have a clue.

I think this could be a fun calling, one of those get out of it what you put into it kinds of deals. And I bet you learn a ton! Can't wait for updates.

I'll ask our PLS more details about her introduction to her calling when she was called a few years ago and let you know.

Also, our ward had a super successful Preparedness fair a few months ago (even if you did read me complaining about it on my blog. heh, heh). Email me if you ever want details of that.

I am the cooking and preparedness group leader for my ward. I love it and our group is tons of fun. It's one of those semi-official callings where people can come to the group if they are interested. You are going to do a great job with that calling.

Amanda, I think you will do a great job with this calling! It sounds like you can make it your own thing since nobody else really knows what you are supposed to be doing either. lol! I'm excited for Bryan to be Cub Master, I think he will do a great job! Have a fun week...
