Growing up, I remember begging my mom and dad to keep the tree up just a little bit longer. I also remember spending New Years Day taking down the tree. Wrapping up the ornaments and carefully putting them back in their spaces. I hated to take down the decorations.
When I married Bryan, I learned that his family thinks it is “bad luck” to have a tree up after December 31. The first year, I was disappointed with that. Now, I am itching to take the tree and decorations down a day or two before Christmas, normally.
This year, that itch to get the house back to normal didn’t hit until a couple days after Christmas. Today I was going crazy. It seems like there is stuff everywhere. And the kids are tired of being together all day everyday so there was fighting and whining happening. So, when I had a free moment, I undecorated the tree.
When my youngest came down the stairs he sat at the counter on a barstool and commented on the lovely tree. A couple moments later, it dawned on him that there were no ornaments.
“Hey! There’s no decorations on that tree.”
He got off the barstool and walked over to investigate and found the box of decorations. His little hands pried the lid off and he saw the ornaments in the box.
His little face fell.
“Is Christmas over?” He was so sad!
And then I felt bad. So I tried to sing the song about keeping Christmas with you all through the year from Christmas Eve on Sesame Street but I couldn’t remember the words. So we talked about the next few holidays instead. He’s all excited for Valentines now.
So I only felt bad for a minute. I was supposed to have a meeting tonight but when it got cancelled, I realized that I could get the rest of the decorations down too. So I worked like a busy bee after dinner and got the house almost back to normal.
BIG sigh of relief.
How about you? When do you take your decorations down?

I took mine down today too. Now my house looks sparse in comparison.
I didn't take photos of my home made gifts before I gave them! What an idiot. But I made Quiet bags for church just like Julie's for all of my nieces and nephews. Then I made felted wool purses for all of my sisters in law. Inside was gum, jelly beans, chapstick and a necklace pendant I made myself. They were along the lines of the scrabble tile pendants you see on etsy.
I enjoyed giving away the home made gifts so much more than the store bought I think we'll try again next year.
I normally take the stuff down sometime around new years, a little earlier if it works, or a little later. We're pretty flexible. But this year we took it all down the saturday after christmas because we got a new digital piano, and it needed to go where the tree was! It was a little sad for me, but worth it to get the piano all settled and a little of the chaos over with.
"Keep Christmas with you, all through the year. When christmas is over keep some christmas cheer. Think of this christmas day, when christmas is far away."
Your tree is gorgeous. :)
Typically a couple days before New Years but this year our tree was doing okay and Chris' parents were coming for New Years so I left it up. I'll probably take it down on Saturday. All the other decorations are put away though.
This year we took our tree down Dec. 26 because I really needed to put my dining room back the way it normally goes in order to accomodate Aspen's train table. Usually we leave it up til New Years or a day or so before. Aspen was sad when we took it down, she loved it.
I put mine up the day after Thanksgiving, but I'm ready for it to all be down by New Years. I love Christmas, don't get me wrong. But, my house looks so clean and uncluttered after I take all the Christmas down. I love it.
Doesn't it seem that Christmas is over so quickly? We spend the whole month getting ready and doing Christmassy things, and then, poof!, it's all over in a few minutes. Maybe that's just me.
