A Sweetness to the Soul by Jane Kirkpatrick ~ This was a book club read. The author is an Oregonian, and this book takes place in Oregon during the late 1800’s. It’s about the settling of Oregon and relationships. The author is very talented at giving you a hint of what is coming and making it so you want to keep reading. I'd like to go and see some of the Oregon country that she describes in the book. Engaging characters, interesting story and good writing. (It’s the first in a series…I tried to read the second and I couldn’t get into it which was disappointing.) *****
The Help by Kathryn Stockett ~ This has been a very popular book, and it’s one that I have recommended a few different times. It takes place in the 1960’s. The book is voiced by three different women with very different lives. It’s interesting to see how they intertwine. My mom read it and she said that she had a hard time with parts of it because she can remember the civil unrest of that time. For my mom, it was more real. For me, who didn’t live it and probably doesn’t really understand it, it’s a story. Does that make sense? *****
The Chosen One by Carol Lynch Williams ~ This is a YA book and it’s a quick read. It was very well written, and I felt every emotion that the character was feeling. There were times that my heart was racing. It’s about a young girl that is being raised in a polygamist community and her struggles with the lifestyle. *****
I also finished the first Harry Potter (J.K. Rowling). I might be the last person on earth. I enjoyed it. I’d give it 3 1/2 stars. I liked it quite a bit until Harry got to Hogwarts. Then I had a hard time. I have a hard time wrapping my brain around the fantasy aspects of these types of books. It took me a bit to get back into it. I don’t see me reading all the books in the series, but we do own book 2 so I’ll probably read it eventually.
What are you reading now?

I just finished The Chosen One from your recommendation. It was a very quick read. I liked that the ending was all happily ever after for everyone. It was so real...I don't want to ruin it for anyone else that wants to read it, but I did enjoy it. The Help is what our book club is reading next, so I will hopefully be getting that one soon. I never read Harry Potter either. I might try that one day.
Thanks for always recommending great books!
My nightstand is so full of books I want to read right NOW that almost every night things topple over. I just bought Housekeeping and checked out Home - Marilynne Robinson (sp?). But I never got into Gilead, so I hope they work. I actually read 2010 take back america. I need to find a copy of and reread Her Fearful Symmetry in the next few days for book club next week. Right here by the computer i also have Reading Lolita in Tehran and The Sweet by and By. I'm hoping for a reading summer - where I can sit on a comfy outdoor chair and read all day while the kids play (and get tired enough to go to bed early). I had LOVED the first 2 or 3 Harry Potters and read them all in one day when they were delivered on my door step early in the morning after being preordered on Amazon. I think it was the 3rd book that gave me big old nightmares (yes, i'm a sissy) and I never finished the series. Maybe I'll try again.
I just finished Hiking Through by Paul Stutzman. I really liked it! It's about a man who grieves his wife's death by hiking the 2,100 mile Appalachian Trail. I think it is a book you would enjoy Amanda.
Hi! I'm Melissa Mc -- one of the members of the PBG started by Janette. Got your book in the mail today! Can't wait!
(Although, I guess we are supposed to keep the titles secret??)
LOVED The Chosen One (did you hear it got the Whitney for Best YA? So deserved it).
Definitely read more of Harry Potter--the books get better as they go. #3 is one of the best.
