There has been much contention, yelling and fighting in my house lately. Part of the bad attitudes and problems probably have to do with the change of weather. We have had a lot of rain and wind in the last couple of weeks. And with the time change, it is dark by 5:15. Also, soccer is over so there are no more practices or games so there is more time to spend all together.
I'm not sure what to do about it either. I know that our home should be a refuge from the modern world. It should be a place for peace and harmony.
So, this week I plan to concentrate on having my kids participate in the housework. We have gotten away from having a regular chore routine. The house seems to run smoother when the kids have chores that they need to get done. I also think that everyone feels more peace when the house is clean and orderly.
Another thing I am hoping is to spend a few minutes each morning with my scriptures. I am enjoying reading the conference talks for scripture study group. I need to play more peaceful music during the day as well.
What do you do when you find that your house in filled with contention? How do you keep your kids distracted? Any thoughts on what I should do?

I find Bible time for me first thing in the morning, a regular routine and chores and the resulting clean house, and time spent doing things as a family make all the difference in the world.
Our home was chaos this weekend too. I find just getting out of the house with them helps. Even with bad weather they need to do something. It helps my sanity too.
I think you've got a great plan. Kids (and adults) thrive on routine. Knowing what's coming and what is expected is a source of comfort.
When it's really bad i usually realize that we haven't read scriptures as a family for a few days. Once we get back to that it brings more peace.
In our house, contention brings out the grumpy mommy which doesn't help the situation! I've had the same thoughts lately: what to do about regaining some harmony. We need to get back into our family scripture reading and I need to be more diligent in my personal study. When I do that, I find that I handle everything better rather than contribute to it. Does that make sense? LOL!
