View From the Top

We live fairly close to several waterfalls so on Sunday we decided to take advantage of that and do some hiking.  When we had friend here for the summer Bryan and Dave hiked to the top of Multnomah Falls.  Bryan decided that we should do that as a family.  I was worried about whether or not the kids could make it {I should have been worried about whether or not I could make it} but we decided to try anyway.

The first thing I noticed was all the leaves and the contrast against the evergreen trees.

The hike is about 1 mile each way.  The problem is that it is one mile straight up.  Or, that is what it feels like anyway.  By the time we got to the top I thought I was going to die.  But I didn't.

On the way up there was lots of spots to stop and take pictures of the kids.  I think they realized if they were having their pictures taken they could stop and rest for a minute.

Once we made it to the top this is the view we had.

If you have seen Multnomah Falls, you know that it falls about 620 feet.  I thought that from the top we would have a better view of it going down, but we didn't.  This is what the view was.

A little disappointing for me.  The kids did surprisingly well on the hike...my daughter and my oldest hiked the whole thing, and my youngest hiked more than I thought he would before he was begging to be carried on Dad's shoulders.

I recommend stopping to see the falls.  I don't recommend the hike up.  Instead, do a whole bunch of small hikes to see some of the nearly six dozen waterfalls in the area.  Because they are beautiful.

Do you have a favorite hike?  Do you like to hike?  Why?  I think I am realizing that I don't like to hike so much.

I love hiking but not uphill all the way! My favorite hike in Oregon is Opal Creek. Your pictures are beautiful Amanda.

It's so pretty there. We'll have to go back through all your beautiful falls shots when everything is grey and frozen this winter...then you'll probably being taking gorgeous winter pics. I love your daughter's hair up like that...it's so cute!

Wow! That is gorgeous. I love hiking, waterfalls, forests, rivers, nature-in-general, etc. And I think the reason I love hiking is because of the fact that I love being outdoors. I'm a terrible hiker, though. I'm always winded and I have to go slowly (much to Brandon's chagrin), but I still enjoy it.
Some of my favorite hikes:
Mt. Timp, Stewart Falls, Tablerock (Tetons), Mt. Diablo (lower loop on the North side near Clayton, CA), and this one along the coast not too far from Big Basin in No. CA. I think I would love living where you are, too, just for the hiking!

Those are such beautiful pictures. I love going on family outings but I don't think I would have made it on that hike.

I finally came over to visit your blog. Your probably linked to me from Cecily. I know her in real life. :) I love to scrapbook too and your pictures are great on your blog. I'll to visit more often.

wow, such incredible views. I wish we could come and visit!
I really like to hike, I like to be out in nature, but the straight uphill stuff really kills me too. Fun though!

Gorgeous pics! I love hiking although we don't do it nearly enough. My favorite thing about it is having such beautiful locations for impromptu family portraits.

I've been to Multnomah Falls so many times but we never went all the way to the top. Talked about it but never did. Kinda bummed with myself that we never did. Next time we are out for a visit I guess.
