Resolutions

Over the last couple weeks Bryan and I have been discussing resolutions.  We’ve tried to explain to the kids what they are – goals we set to improve ourselves over the course of a year.  We’ve been pondering goals that we want to make for ourselves.  At midnight last night, I asked my kids what they were resolving to do in 2010 and my oldest announced that his goal was to get two strikes in one game of real bowling.

We don’t typically go bowling much.  Once upon a time, Bryan and I played in leagues.  Our team even won once.  It was before we were married, even before we dated.  It was so much fun.  We got to know each other so well.   And I was guaranteed one night a week with this cute guy that I had a serious crush on.  We got to be pretty good bowlers, too.  We each bought our own bowling balls and Bryan has his own shoes.  Mine is 11 pounds.  I used to be able to play 4+ games with it and not get tired.  I’ve gotten weaker since I had kids though, because now I can barely get through 2 games with my ball.

Anyway. Back to the resolution.  We went bowling last week while my mother-in-law was here.  My sister called this morning and she and I took the kids bowling this afternoon. Twice in two weeks is a lot for us.  My kids were thrilled.  My oldest got 119 in both games.  He got 2 strikes in his first game. Awesome.

He finished his resolution on day 1 of 2010.

He rocks.

I don’t, however.  I made some resolutions last year too.  I did okay – I’m healthier (although not lighter, but I’m working out and eating better), I read a bigger variety of books, although my spirituality needs to be increased and I still have quilts to finish.   The last time I sat down and made some goals was my birthday.  Over the last six months, they’ve changed a little bit, but overall they are the same.  I also realized that I try a lot more new recipes than I realized.  (I’m planning on posting about some of them this year.  Wait and see!)  So, I’ve set some goals.  It makes me more accountable to share them with the whole world so here goes:

In 2010 I want to:

  1. Be a writing mother.  I am reading this book called Writing Motherhood by Lisa Garrigues, and it has inspired me.  And lately, I feel deep stirrings to get back to writing.  I’d like to submit pieces to different places.  Maybe something will get published, maybe it wont but I’d like to be a writing mother.
  2. I want to complete a December Daily album, similar to the one Ali Edwards does on her blog each year. (I’d also love to finish the Project 365 that I started-still deciding if I want to do another one.)
  3. I want to finish the quilts that I have started.  I have three started.  The top is completely done on one.  I just need to sew the back together, have it quilted and put a binding on.  The second is a quilt-block-of-the-month class that I started ages ago. I have 9 of the 12 blocks done.  The third is a rag quilt that I have started but not finished.  My MIL gave me a really cute quilt kit for Christmas too, and I’d like to get that done as well.
  4. I want to be better about posting pictures on Project 3,000.  We got a new camera for Christmas and what better way to learn how to use it?
  5. I want to say yes to my kids more.  I think I need more patience but really I need to say yes more.  They would be happier which would make me happier.  Too often, I say, “no, not right now.”  Doing this will require me to manage my time better – stay away from the computer more.  Prioritize.  Organize.

So, how about you?  What are your goals?  Do you have any advice for me on my goals?

Saying "yes" more also means fewer battles of will and punishments. It's a good thing if you can do it. I'm not brave enough to commit to that.

I'm working on Personal Progress this year and more classes to creep closer to graduation.

My only resolution is to take more pictures...and blog more consistantly!

I like to say "yes" to my kids. It's a good philosophy...as long as you don't get taken advatage of!

I noticed your book club selection and anything by Jane Kirkpatrick is A+ in my book. I sat down and set some goals the other day and I'm feeling pretty good about it. Don't get down on yourself for not doing everything on your list. You'll get there and the fact that you did some of it is pretty great! I really need to work on my spiritual life and for me it has started by getting what I wanted for Christmas, scriptures on CD. Just in two trips to the gym I'm already through all of the intro, testimonies and title page and 3 chapters of the Book of Mormon. Wahoo! I'm loving it.

Love your goals. I like the "say yes" one. It's so hard to know when to say yes and when to stand firm....

My goals are:
Read the Ensign every month.
Go to the temple 10 times in '10. (Clever -- I didn't realize that worked out like that till just now....)
Finish the advent calendar I started.
Play with my kids (toys. Etc.) once a week.

Simple and attainable (I hope)....

Writing Motherhood sounds great...I think I will make that the next book I read. I too feel the pull to write all the time, as you know. Hopefully we'll both be able to do more of that in 2010!
